Fire Exit Theatre presents: "Nativity in the City"Featuring the play, “Nativity on the Square” by Tom S. Long and other writings by Val Lieske Directed by Val Lieske Produced in association with Ambrose University Theatre Nativity in the City is some traditional Christmas characters telling the story in a rather non-traditional way. We follow Irene through the streets of downtown until she stumbles (literally) on a Nativity scene, complete with Mary, Joseph, a shepherd, a wisemen, and an angel. Soon Irene remembers her days of playing Mary in the Christmas pageant and begins a recitation of the story. This leads to her telling her own story of how she ended up on the street. Sometimes solemn and often hilarious. “I’m not the biggest fan of Christmas,” says Val Lieske, Artistic Director for Fire Exit Theatre. “Too much hustle and bustle and no time to sit and really unpack what the season is about. This story has helped me do that.” She goes on to say, “Hearing the story told from a homeless, intoxicated woman has really put a different spin on it. She totally believes in the saving power of baby Jesus but also believes his power won’t save her. I think we’ve all had moments of that. Of believing wholeheartedly that God is all about forgiveness…for other people. But that our transgression may just be too much for him. “You will most certainly laugh at this story,” Val says, “but there’s a good chance you may also cry. It’s a really fantastic way to start the Christmas season. | |
