Play Summary: Two aging sisters’ lives are interrupted by a young door-to-door evangelist. Things take a turn for the unexpected (and hilarious) when they invite the evangelist and the local parish priest to dinner at the same time. A sort of theological Golden Girls, at the intersection of theology and real life.

Character Breakdown:
These are comical, paradoxical characters from the American South. They are real people, not caricatures. They are lower middle class, with specific, deeply-held ideological beliefs.

MARY: The oldest sister. Elderly. Agile spark plug who can be physical when necessary. A no-nonsense, like-able, cranky firecracker who says what she thinks and refuses to be taken advantage of. Strong personality required. Able to truthfully reveal underlying pain when the moment comes.

MARGARET: The younger sister. Elderly. A bit wide-eyed and genuinely friendly to everyone. Can’t say no – can get taken advantage of. Literally frightened by conflict to the point she leaves the room. She is unsettled by big words, heady doctrine, and strong opinions. Courageous in her pursuit of truth.

MELISSA: 30’s (needs to look older than 25). Direct, earnest, confident. Blond (“Natural, with highlights for lift”). Loves Jesus. Wants to love a man. Well-groomed, always does her hair and make-up. Think of her as a southern cheerleader with the best of intentions, and a history of bad luck with men. Her loneliness and desire to do good are both real.

FATHER MURPHY: Middle-aged. Priest. Author. Intellectual. A man who lives a life of the mind. He is settled in life and his little routines. Not easily ruffled or engaged. Honest.
