She will be speaking about her work, her process, and reading selections from her plays. Where: Yellow Studio, Community Arts Building, Currie Barracks 2633 Hochwald Ave SW When: Saturday, April 23rd, 2011 Time: 2:00pm For more information or to RSVP, please contact Michelle Kneale at dramaturg@albertaplaywrights.com Your RSVP is not mandatory but is appreciated ________________________________________________________________________ Catherine Banks began her professional life as a Special Education teacher, and wrote plays while raising her children, Rilla and Simon, inspired by seeing a production of Les Belles-soeurs by Michel Tremblay. Her produced plays include Bone Cage; The Summer of the Piping Plover; Three Storey Ocean View; and Bitter Rose. Bitter Rose has aired on Bravo! Canada.In 2008 Bone Cage was awarded the Governor General’s Award for Literature (English) Drama. Catherine received Nova Scotia’s Established Artist Award for her body of work in 2008. Catherine's plays are characterized by black humour, and compelling dramatic metaphor. Bone Cage and Three Storey Ocean View, have been described as “Atlantic gothic,” because of their unflinching exploration of poverty, monotony and the addictions that often provide an escape from such social limitations. She is currently writing Missy’n Me, a road play about a Nova Scotia hair dresser driving to New York (in her husband's plumbing van) so that she can lie her way into meeting the Rapper Missy Elliott. ________________________________________________________________________ Alberta Playwrights’ Network and Ms. Banks gratefully acknowledge the support of the Canada Council for the Arts for this event. | |
