This two-day, intensive workshop will focus on the creation of Theatre for Young Audiences, from both the writing and production aspects. TYA producers, Duval Lang and Mieko Ouchi will lead seminars focusing on understanding and overcoming obstacles that face TYA production. Day One (10AM - 5PM) - "Understanding the Marketplace", with Duval Lang Former Artistic Director of Quest Theatre in Calgary, Duval Lang, will guide participants through a discussion entitled "Understanding the Marketplace". What is the market for TYA plays in Alberta and beyond? Topics of conversation will range from curriculum concerns to censorship, satisfying your stakeholders to satisfying your vision, engaging an audience and creating a dialogue (especially with teens). Day Two (10AM - 5PM) - "Know your Audience, Challenge your Audience", with Mieko Ouchi Artistic Co-Director of Concrete Theatre in Edmonton, Mieko Ouchi. She will guide participants through a discussion entitled "Know your Audience, Challenge your Audience". Topics of conversation will range from what playwrights need to know and think about when writing for different age groups, to the intersections where a play's content meets curriculum and the community, ethics and responsibilities around writing socially relevant new work and specific ideas for engaging young audiences. | |
